Rigidity test stands

Rigidities are an important quality characteristics when manufacturing frames. So much so, it is now being tested all the more frequently, even by specialist bike magazines. As a non-destructive testing method, rigidity tests are an excellent way of controlling 100% of the manual production of carbon frames.

The specialized test stands are easy to operate and produce accurate and repeatable measurement results. The new test stand designs minimize the errors resulting from the testing stands own insufficient rigidity. Using the optonal software module STERSOFT, data sampling can simply be initiated by PC at the touch of a button.

STERS Frame Track-holding rigidity test stand
------------------------------------------------------

The track-stiffness (also called torsion rigidity) is a common method of measuring the track consistency of the bike. The lateral bending of the head tube axle at the front wheel contact point is measured by securely fixing the rear wheel axle, centrally supporting the head tube, and by using a defined lateral load. A double tube load lever now replaces the compensation calculation, which was necessary due to the deflection of the load lever.

STERW Frame Out-of-saddle rigidity test stand
------------------------------------------------------

The out-of-saddle frame rigidity test (bottom bracket rigidity) is a method for measuring the resistance a frame exerts against the out-of-saddle forces. The frame is supported appropriately, allowing for all necessary degrees of freedom present in the bike’s standard operation. The testing load is applied at defined distance from the middle of the bottom bracket at a specific angle onto the (extended) bottom bracket axle. The test stand is made for complete frame/fork units as common in the high end market of race frames. By means of the additional module STERW1 frames can be tested without forks too. A lever mechanism enables effortless lifting of the 80 kg load just using a foot pedal.
